Andrei Rodionenko: ‘New rules add complexity to WC 2013 preparation’

September 8, 2013

At this moment of time gymnasts are busy preparing for the WC which will take place in Antwept (Belgium) from 30th September to 6th October. How serious this championship should be taken? ‘First of all, this is the first major championship after London Olympics 2012. Secondly, it is quite an important championship as the new rules and set of regulations are to be used. What makes it difficult is the fact that every year FIG introduces new rules and code of points into the tournament. This year’s amendments were so tough that even until now we have not determined the final team of men and women’ – an expert said.

Andrei Rodionenko

‘The difficulty of the new rules is that only three gymnasts are allowed on one apparatus, while before 4 gymnasts were allowed’ – added Andrei Rodianenko. ‘This adds to the confusion. If the country has a number of good all-rounders and gymnasts who are exceptionally good in certain disciplines then the new system is not considering this. For example, we now have a chance for two good gymnasts to represent our team on the rings. However it’s most likely that we won’t be able to do that. To meet the new rules, we will have to send one gymnast only which is against our favor. That is why we decided to put the following commonly used sports principle into practice: whoever meets the new qualification criteria will be taken into the national team’.

According to him, other countries are suffering from the similar issues. ‘I guess Japan and China are experiencing the same kind of issues’ – said Rodionenko.

Another serious concern for a Russian National Team has become a virus infection which podkosilo the team. ‘The Russian Gymnastics Training Center ‘Ozero Krugloe’ has somehow received a very serious virus. The whole women’s team has suffered from it to a different degree. Even the most tough ones have fallen ill’ – Russian National Team mentor said.

‘Instead of Viktoria Komova who is ill, we can take Ana Rodionova’.

Rodionenko said that a two times Olympic 2012 silver champion Viktoriya Komova continues to recover after the illness and can still make it into the Russian National team for WC.

‘Women’s team have a difficult situation’ – an insider said – ‘to everyone’s surprise Komova fell ill by catching a virus infection. She was urgently hospitalized. One week ago she started training again. Viktoria is a number one contender for getting into the team. Aliya Mustafina, Tatiana Nabieva and Maria Paseka are also likely to get into the WC team’.

Rodionenko also noted that Ksenia Afanasyeva did not take part in the qualification for WC. ‘Ksenia has been suffering from a number of injuries. It’s whether she tries to sort out her issue with an ankle now, or will be too late then. We place more value on her participation in future events’ – added an expert.

According to the Head Coach, 5 male gymnasts have received a go ahead to participate in WC. The list includes Russia Cup winner on pommel horse Matvei Petrov who demonstrated a winning combination. Meanwhile Denis Ablyazin and Aleksandr Balandin are expected to compete on rings. However the former gymnast was not able to demonstrate the desired result thereby taking a first place in the reserve team.

  • Glaucia Sousa says:

Why don´t you call Anna Demmenteyeva? Her scores are better that Navieva, and she is very good in BB. You really should call her before she quit and go compete for another country, as did Anna PAVLOLA.

In addition, there Nastia Grishna, and personal problems with Rodienkos Grishna are negligible near the interests of the motherland Russia Championship WORLDS
